In a warmer, richer world, the demand for air conditioning will skyrocket. However, improving the average efficiency of air conditioners sold in 2030 by 30% compared to today’s models would reduce emissions of CO2 by up to 25 billion metric tons over the lifetime of the equipment. The Clean Energy Ministerial launched the Advanced Cooling Challenge to inspire governments and industry to make, sell, promote, and install super-efficient air conditioner or cooling solutions that are smart, climate friendly, and affordable.

Lighting accounts for 15 percent of global electricity consumption and 5 percent of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, 1.2 billion people lack access to modern energy services, including reliable lighting. For many, hazardous energy sources such as kerosene are the only option. To address these immense problems, last year at COP21 in Paris, the Clean Energy Ministerial launched the Global Lighting Challenge — a race to deploy 10 billion high-efficiency, high-quality, and affordable lighting products (such as LEDs) as quickly as possible.

A collaborative approach is absolutely critical to realizing the ambitious and comprehensive agreement reached at COP21 in Paris last year. With the energy sector worldwide representing two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions, it is clear that one of the most essential solutions to climate change is a global transformation to clean energy. As clean energy, and energy efficiency in particular, plays a critical role in addressing climate change, so does the Clean Energy Ministerial — the CEM.

The role of energy efficiency in meeting energy access goals

Energy efficiency is a critically important component of global efforts to provide access to modern energy services to the billion plus people worldwide who currently lack access to electricity. Basic energy services such as lighting and phone charging are an important first rung in the energy access ladder, but the broader socio-economic benefits of electricity access require higher levels of energy services. High-quality, super-efficient off-grid appliances require less energy and reduce the size of the off-grid energy systems needed to run them. Global LEAP partners are working to support thriving commercial markets for off-grid appliances and equipment.

New Energy Management Standards Help Demonstrate Energy Performance Improvement

This November, the International Standards Organization (ISO) published ISO 50047 – Determination of Energy Savings in Organizations, which builds on ISO 50001, the family of international energy management standards, by providing organizations with the additional guidance needed to calculate and accept with confidence the effect that implemented energy performance actions have had on facility-wide energy efficiency.
