10 Ways the Clean Energy Ministerial Is Helping Drive the World’s Clean Energy Revolution

If we’re going to solve the challenge of climate change, we need to make a rapid shift to clean energy. That’s why the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) was launched in 2010. At this year’s seventh annual Clean Energy Ministerial meeting, CEM7, energy ministers and business leaders from more than 25 countries will tackle a number of challenges, such as reaching the clean energy goals outlined in the COP21 Paris Climate Agreement. But the CEM is more than just a meeting. It’s also a collection of groundbreaking campaigns and initiatives that provide people around the world with the tools they need to join the clean energy revolution. This blog lists 10 ways that the CEM is advancing clean energy worldwide.

What You Need to Know about Distributed Renewable Energy Markets in Africa

For African countries, accessing sources of renewable energy is still a challenge. Renewable energy is mostly distributed through mini-grids and isolated systems. Recently, the mini-grid distribution sector has grown considerably, particularly in developing countries in Africa where centralised grid systems are unable to reach people in remote locations. Dr. Rose Mutiso, co-lead of the Clean Energy Ministerial's Global LEAP initiative, spoke with Ventures Africa to shed more light on what the future of a distributed renewable energy market in Africa could look like for interested investors and consumers.

21CPP Fellowship Program Builds Power System Expertise

The CEM’s 21st Century Power Partnership (21CPP) has launched a fellowship program to support mid-career peer learning, mentorship, skills development, and collaborative research among partner institutions to support power systems transformation. 21CPP fellows will spend an average six to eight weeks on assignment in a host organization with scientific or practical expertise in a needed field of study. The first two fellows came from India to work at U.S. national laboratories to learn about the methodologies and software tools used in large-scale integration studies.

Global LEAP and the Emerging Off-Grid Appliance Market

A recently published GOGLA blog discusses Global LEAP's coordination of efforts to facilitate development of a strong, competitive market of high-quality, super-efficient off-grid appliances. The CEM initiative is spearheading a suite of groundbreaking activities and partnerships to equip the off-grid market to make better-informed, faster decisions about appliances. The 4th International Off-Grid Lighting Conference and Exhibition included a side event for attendees to learn more about Global LEAP.

DC Power for the Off-Grid Market

Direct current (DC) power – combined with mobile solutions – can improve energy access by enabling the provision of efficient solutions. CEM's Global LEAP initiative works with off-grid energy service providers and DC appliance manufacturers to help raise awareness and promote high-quality, energy-efficient, and affordable off-grid products.

Building a Global Low-Carbon Technology Pathway

At the 20th Conference of the Parties (COP20) in Lima, Peru, a live panel discussion highlighted CEM’s solid record of achievement in accelerating the transition to clean energy. It also focused on how the CEM can contribute to a successful outcome in the 2015 Paris climate negotiations and the role the CEM can play in the implementation of actions and policies to help countries meet their energy-related contributions in a new climate agreement.
