CEM’s Advanced Cooling Challenge Recruited $1.4 billion in Investments to Promote Efficient Cooling Technology

Since its launch one year ago, the Advanced Cooling Challenge has recruited 26 commitments & $1.4 billion in investments from national governments, and global leading manufacturers, institutions, & NGOs

Today, at the eighth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM8), the Advanced Cooling Challenge (ACC) announced that it has recruited 26 commitments and $USD 1.4 billion of investments towards developing and deploying energy-efficient air conditioners that use low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants.

Launched one year ago at the seventh Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM7), the ACC challenges public and private sector leaders to develop and deploy at scale super-efficient, smart, and climate-friendly affordable cooling technologies.

Electricity demand for air conditioning is huge—and growing every day. For example, the additional electricity demand generated by new in-room air conditioners purchased between 2010 and 2020 is projected to grow to more than 600 billion kilowatt-hours globally by 2020. This growth poses a challenge to electricity grids already struggling to satisfy existing demand.

Improving the average efficiency of air conditioners sold in 2030 by 30% could reduce emissions by up to 25 billion tons of CO2 & reduce peak electricity demand by up to 340-790 gigawatts, and replacing high-GWP refrigerants would contribute to even greater achievements.

The substantial investment from ACC participants will support research and development efforts, industry capacity building, policy development, technical assistance, and cooling product deployment.

To date, ACC participants have also:

  • Launched policy development and technical assistance efforts in 4 regions and nearly 20 countries,
  • Developed guides and market assessment tools to inform policy development and implementation for 150 countries,
  • Produced and tested new climate friendly refrigerants and energy efficient HVAC components in partner countries, and
  • Increased data collection and sharing in the AC Market Tracker (ACMT).

The AC Challenge developed the ACMT to show the global status of cooling products. It is an online tool that contains data on cooling products, such as energy efficiency, refrigerant, price, price versus efficiency, and capacity. Policy makers, industry stakeholders, institutions, and consumers can use it to support policy design, research, and purchase decisions.

The AC Challenge urges governments and industry to develop and deploy at scale super-efficient, smart, climate-friendly, and affordable cooling technologies that are critical for prosperous and healthy societies. The campaign challenges governments, companies, and other stakeholders to make, sell, promote, or install super-efficient air conditioner or cooling solutions that are smart, climate-friendly, and affordable. The campaign seeks commitments, supporting actions, and endorsing statements from energy and related government agencies, public sector organizations, manufacturers, retailers, institutional buyers, and foundations.
