Lighting accounts for 15 percent of global electricity consumption and 5 percent of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, 1.2 billion people lack access to modern energy services, including reliable lighting. For many, hazardous energy sources such as kerosene are the only option. To address these immense problems, last year at COP21 in Paris, the Clean Energy Ministerial launched the Global Lighting Challenge — a race to deploy 10 billion high-efficiency, high-quality, and affordable lighting products (such as LEDs) as quickly as possible.

Clean Energy Ministerial countries and global corporations collaborate to advance efficient lighting

The Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) today announced the formal launch of the Global Lighting Challenge (GLC)—a race to deploy 10 billion high-efficiency, high-quality, and affordable lighting products (such as LED bulbs) as quickly as possible. An overnight global transition to highly efficient lighting could avoid more than 800 million metric tons of CO2 emissions. The GLC was announced by Sweden’s Minister of Energy Ibrahim Baylan, along with Ikea’s Chief Sustainability Officer Steve Howard and other CEM partners, during an event at the COP21 climate negotiations. Initial commitments to the GLC were also announced.

Global LEAP Off-Grid Appliance Market Survey

This document presents the results of a Global LEAP survey of energy access professionals, reporting on the appliance products that they think are likely to inspire the greatest off-grid consumer demand over the next 3 to 5 years, and the appliances that they think are likely to drive the greatest energy access (e.g., socioeconomic or environmental) benefits. Survey respondents ranked LED room lighting appliances as the top appliance driving off-grid consumer demand, and the top product driving the energy access benefits.
