New, Multilateral Clean Energy Ministerial Secretariat Team Announced

The Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM)—a unique partnership of 25 key countries working together to accelerate the global energy transition—is pleased to announce the staff selected to support the new CEM Secretariat based at the International Energy Agency’s headquarters in Paris, France. The new CEM Secretariat team consists of experts on international diplomacy and clean energy policy from around the world. This diverse team, which captures the breadth of CEM membership, will help facilitate increased international cooperation and collaborative work through the CEM.

New Commitments Highlight Progress of Energy Management Campaign at Eighth Clean Energy Ministerial

Governments, companies, and international partners step up their efforts to accelerate implementation of ISO 50001

Partners shared their newest commitments to the Energy Management Campaign with an international assembly of high-level clean energy leaders attending the 8th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM8), which took place June 6–8 in Beijing, China. One of the highlights of the three-day event, the Campaign aims, by 2020, to achieve 50,001 global certifications to ISO 50001, the global energy management system standard. During related CEM8 events, governments, global business leaders, and other key partners outlined concrete actions they will take to promote ISO 50001 and make progress towards climate and energy goals.

Corporate Sourcing for Renewables Campaign Demonstrates Momentum at Eighth Clean Energy Ministerial

Governments, companies, and international partners highlight progress and announce key deliverables to accelerate the clean energy transition through corporate sourcing

Today, key partners in the Clean Energy Ministerial’s Corporate Sourcing of Renewables Campaign highlighted progress and announced major new efforts to help companies increase their use of renewable energy and help power a transition to a clean energy future. The campaign was featured during the eighth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM8) Public–Private Action Summit, held in Beijing and hosted by China’s Ministry of Science and Technology and National Energy Administration (NEA). Campaign announcements to attending global leaders included news that RE100 has grown by half over the past year, the release of new reports on enabling frameworks, and a new annual Corporate Sourcing conference. In addition, China announced it would co-lead the campaign, joining Denmark and Germany.

CEM’s Global Lighting Challenge Announces 14 Billion Efficient Lighting Products Committed in Two Years

13 new companies have committed 6 billion products to advance efficient lighting

At an Eighth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM8) side event on efficient lighting, 13 companies announced new commitments to the Global Lighting Challenge (GLC) totaling nearly 6 billion LED lighting products. The GLC has now reached 14 billion high efficiency, high quality lighting products committed, surpassing its 10 billion light goal set at the sixth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM6) two years ago.

Clean Energy Ministerial Secondment Joins World Bank Group

Last year, the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) and the Energy Sector Management Assistance Program (ESMAP) at the World Bank announced a partnership to help developing countries integrate renewable energy into their power grids. One of the first activities in this partnership was a staff assignment from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to ESMAP. Since August 2015, this “secondment” at ESMAP has facilitated better communication between NREL, ESMAP, and the CEM initiative teams. Nate Blair was selected for the staff assignment.

At COP21 event with California Governor Brown, Moniz says CEM7 an opportunity for follow-up action to advance clean energy revolution

U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz and California Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today announced that the United States will host the seventh Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM7) in San Francisco, California, June 1–2, 2016. The announcement was made at an event in Paris during the COP21 UN Climate Negotiations. The annual meeting of energy ministers and other high-level delegates from the 23 CEM member countries and the European Commission will provide an opportunity for the major economies to collaborate on solutions that advance clean energy globally and demonstrate tangible follow-up actions to COP21.

Countries around the world are looking to implement policies and programs to deploy clean energy and reduce their carbon emissions. A new collaboration between the Clean Energy Ministerial’s Clean Energy Solutions Center and the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN), hosted by the United Nations Environmental Programme, will expand expert policy support to help developing countries bolster clean energy deployment.
