The United Arab Emirates Hosts the First International C3E Symposium

International C3E Ambassadors participated in the Women in Clean Energy Symposium and met to discuss strategies for developing national programs to advance women’s leadership and participation in clean energy.

The United Arab Emirates recently hosted an international event of the Clean Energy Ministerial’s Clean Energy Education and Empowerment (C3E) initiative. The Women in Clean Energy Symposium took place during the 2015 World Future Energy Summit, an annual event dedicated to advancing clean energy. Seven international C3E Ambassadors participated in the event and met to discuss strategies for developing national programs to advance women’s leadership and participation in clean energy. The United Arab Emirates announced the international C3E Symposium in May 2014 during the fifth Clean Energy Ministerial in Seoul, South Korea.

The Symposium was hosted under the umbrella of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) inaugural Women in Sustainability, Environment, and Renewable Energy (WISER) Forum. International C3E Ambassadors Eng. Fatima Al Foora, Deb Frodl, Nancy Pfund, Mary Anne Sullivan, Dymphna van der Lans, Richenda Van Leeuwen, and Alla Weinstein attended the Symposium. Other attendees at the WISER forum included Dr. Nawal Al Hosany, Director of the Zayed Future Energy Prize and Director of Sustainability at Masdar Institute, and Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of State and Chairman of Masdar Institute.

Following the forum, Eng. Fatima Al Foora, UAE Assistant Undersecretary for Electricity, Clean Energy, and Desalinated Water Affairs and international C3E Ambassador, hosted a closed-door dinner meeting for the international C3E Ambassadors. The group discussed next steps for the C3E initiative and strategies to support the development of robust national programs for participating C3E governments.

C3E is an initiative of the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) that aims to advance gender equality in the clean energy sector. Launched as a network of national-level actions, C3E is advancing women’s leadership in clean energy globally through the international C3E Ambassador Corps and the online community forum C3Enet.org. The inaugural WISER Forum, held as part of Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, highlighted women’s leadership and careers in sustainability, particularly those related to energy, water, and climate change.
