Campaigns

CEM campaigns are short-term efforts to raise ambition, increase visibility, and target resources to initiative work and topic areas that have particular potential for impact. The CEM campaigns seek to catalyze public and private actions towards ambitious but realistic targets.

At the seventh Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM7), new campaigns were launched in three clean energy areas – the corporate sourcing of renewables, super-efficient and climate friendly cooling technologies, and commercial and industrial energy efficiency. Three campaigns launched at the sixth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM6) focused on efficient lighting, low-carbon power systems, and policy assistance for low-carbon development.

Active Campaigns


 

The Advanced Cooling Campaign challenges governments and industry to develop and deploy at scale super-efficient, smart, climate-friendly, and affordable cooling technologies critical for prosperous and healthy societies. Moving to 30% higher efficiency in parallel with transitioning to low-global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants in air conditioners sold in 2030 could reduce peak electricity demand by as much as 340-790 gigawatts (GW) and avoid over 25 billion tonnes (Gt) of carbon dioxide (CO2) over the lifetime of the equipment – equivalent to avoiding as many as 1,500 peak power plants. The AC Challenge leverages the work of the CEM’s Super-Efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment Initiative (SEAD).

 

The Corporate Sourcing of Renewables Campaign is a collaborative effort to significantly increase the number of companies around the world powering operations with renewable energy. If 1,000 of the world’s most influential businesses become 100% powered by renewables, they could decarbonize almost a tenth of all electricity used worldwide and cut more than 1 Gt CO2 every year. The CEM governments are joined by several partners, including the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA), The Climate Group, World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), World Resources Institute (WRI), and others. The Corporate Sourcing of Renewables Campaigns builds from work taking place in the CEM’s Multilateral Solar and Wind Working Group

 

The Energy Management Campaign aims to achieve 50,001 global ISO 50001 energy management certifications by 2020 in order to drive energy savings, cost savings and emissions reductions in the commercial and industrial sectors. Broad implementation of ISO 50001 across the commercial and industrial sectors globally could drive cumulative energy savings of approximately 62 exajoules by 2030 and avoid 6.5 Gt CO2– equivalent to removing 215 million passenger vehicles from the road. This campaign is an elevation of work taking place in the CEM’s Energy Management Working Group.

 

The Global Lighting Challenge is a race to reach cumulative global sales of 10 billion high-efficiency, high-quality, and affordable advanced lighting products, such as light-emitting diode (LED) lamps, as quickly as possible. If the entire world switches to highly efficient LED lighting, we could avoid 801 million tonnes (Mt) of CO2 – equivalent to displacing 684 coal-fired power plants around the world. Highly efficient LED lighting optimizes power from smaller and less expensive off-grid energy systems as well, putting enhanced energy services in reach for more off-grid households around the world. The Global Lighting Challenge builds off work in the CEM’s Super-efficient Equipment and Appliance Deployment (SEAD) initiative and the Global Lighting and Energy Access Partnership (Global LEAP).    

       

Past Campaigns


 

The Clean Energy Solutions Center is an initiative under the CEM that has been highly successful at providing fast-response, high-quality, unbiased expert policy assistance at no cost to government policy makers around the world. The campaign, launched at CEM6, was a year-long effort to increase resources and scale up the Solutions Center in order to help even more governments design and adopt policies and programs to reach their clean energy and climate goals. This scale-up also included creating a new Finance Solutions Center, launched at COP21, to provide resources and expert assistance to fill a critical knowledge gap in the clean energy finance space.

The CEM’s Power System Challenge is helping accelerate transformation to clean, reliable, resilient, and affordable power systems of the 21st century. The Power Systems Challenge provides a platform for sharing effective innovations and strategies and supports faster implementation of domestic power system reform measures. The Power System Challenge is a joint effort among several CEM initiatives, including the 21st Century Power Partnership (21CPP), the Multilateral Solar and Wind Working Group, the International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN), and the Electric Vehicles Initiative (EVI).
