Status Report on Power System Transformation

Status Report on Power System Transformation

This 21st Century Power Partnership report provides empirical examples of the types of power system innovations that are emerging around the world, showing what power sector transformation is and how it is being achieved today. As the examples reveal, the word “innovation” itself is not limited to merely technology, but applies widely across policy, planning, operation, finance, and business models.

Making Coal Flexible: Getting From Baseload to Peaking Plant

Making Coal Flexible: Getting From Baseload to Peaking Plant

Power systems in the 21st century will favor resources that have low marginal costs and provide system flexibility, including the ability to cycle on and off and to run at low minimum loads to complement variations in output. This paper uses a case study of a coal-fired generating station (CGS) to evaluate how power plants intended to run at baseload can evolve to serve other system needs. It shows that coal-fired power plants can continue to operate cost-effectively if they cycle routinely. This report is also available in Mandarin.
