Electric Vehicles Initiative Government Fleet Declaration

Eight major nations signed a Government Fleet Declaration on November 16, pledging to increase the share of electric vehicles in their government fleets and calling for other governments to join them. The Declaration was announced at the Marrakech Climate Change Conference (COP22) and was developed under the aegis of the Clean Energy Ministerial’s Electric Vehicles Initiative.

A collaborative approach is absolutely critical to realizing the ambitious and comprehensive agreement reached at COP21 in Paris last year. With the energy sector worldwide representing two-thirds of global greenhouse gas emissions, it is clear that one of the most essential solutions to climate change is a global transformation to clean energy. As clean energy, and energy efficiency in particular, plays a critical role in addressing climate change, so does the Clean Energy Ministerial — the CEM.

Ministers Feature Clean Energy Ministerial as Implementation Forum at COP22

Ministers and other leaders announce new efforts to help countries achieve clean energy goals

Several events at the 22nd United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP22) highlighted the value and impact of the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) as a global platform to help countries implement their clean energy goals and achieve their nationally determined contributions (NDCs). CEM initiatives and campaigns were featured and new efforts announced to accelerate clean energy deployment that will help achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement while boosting economies and increasing energy security.

The 21st United Nations climate conference (COP21) in Paris brought the world together in an effort to tackle climate change and set the world on a low-carbon pathway. With a successful outcome and a historic agreement reached, the focus now shifts to the “road from Paris.” One of the most crucial solutions to climate change is a global transition to clean energy, making the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) more important and more relevant than ever. Several events at COP21 featured the role of the CEM as an implementation forum and highlighted results from CEM initiatives. New CEM campaigns were also launched to raise the visibility and direct much-needed resources to targeted areas that have particular potential for impact.

The EV City Casebook: 50 Big Ideas is one of the Low Carbon Champions for 2014–2015, as announced by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership (LowCVP). The Casebook was a cooperative effort of the Clean Energy Ministerial’s Electric Vehicles Initiative (EVI), the International Energy Agency’s Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Implementing Agreement, and future city think tank Urban Foresight and was recognized as the Low Carbon Publication or Report of the Year.

EVI Research Highlights the Potential for Electric Vehicles in India

EVs could save 4.8 billion barrels of oil, 270 million tons carbon dioxide (CO2)

A new report by the Clean Energy Ministerial’s Electric Vehicles Initiative (EVI) shows the substantial impact that electric vehicle (EV) deployment would have on India’s oil consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Assessing and Accelerating Vehicle Deployment in India finds that the benefits of EVs in India are greater than expected when real-world driving conditions are taken into account.

World Energy Leaders Highlight Progress and Announce New Actions on Clean Energy at Fifth Clean Energy Ministerial

On 12–13 May, energy leaders from the world’s largest economies and others gathered in Seoul for the fifth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM5) to strategize next steps in their efforts to accelerate the deployment of clean and efficient energy. Energy ministers and other high-level delegates highlighted progress made through the Ministerial’s collaborative initiatives and announced new and expanded actions that will enhance clean energy supply, improve energy efficiency, and expand clean energy access around the world.
