Detroit Diesel Verifies $37 Million in Energy Savings with SEP

Daimler’s Detroit Diesel Corporation facility earned Platinum certification in the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Superior Energy Performance® (SEP™) program. The facility implemented a robust energy management system in compliance with ISO 50001 and used SEP to quantify its energy performance improvement. Through SEP, the facility demonstrated a 32.5% energy performance improvement and $37 million in energy cost savings over 10 years. These impressive energy and cost savings garnered attention and support from management, all the way up to Detroit Diesel’s parent company, Daimler, in Germany. The video describes how the automotive manufacturer manages energy and uses SEP to track progress, verify savings, and build confidence for future investments in resource efficiency measures that can stimulate growth and create jobs.

The home ventilation producer has prided themselves on their environmentally conscious products. They have spearheaded eco-initiatives in their Mississauga, Ontario plant since 2007, and routinely examine new ways to enhance environmental protection. Broan-NuTone did not want to stop there and they wanted to go further, achieve many different things, and bring more improvements to the business. So with the help of Natural Resources Canada’s Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (NRCan’s CIPEC), the plant achieved ISO 50001 certification and became a trailblazer for energy management.

KI Pembroke is Making Changes and Saving Energy

Located in Pembroke, Ontario, KI Pembroke is a world-class producer of steel filing and storage office furniture, committed to sustainable manufacturing processes. Dan Mellen, general manager at KI Pembroke, explains that a driving force behind their success has been their partnership with the Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC). In 2012, KI Pembroke took advantage of corporate’s new energy policy to begin their own energy management system, to maximize the benefits of energy efficiency. They set a target in 2013 to reduce their energy consumption by approximately 10% and then they partnered with CIPEC, among others, to launch a campaign featuring awareness events, workshops, and training.

Chrysler’s Brampton, Ontario plant is one of the largest producers of vehicles in Canada, and it’s also the first automotive assembly plant in Canada to achieve ISO 50001 certification. In this video, the Brampton plant team describes the plant’s partnership with Natural Resources Canada’s Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (NRCan’s CIPEC) for support towards ISO 50001 certification. Plant manager, Dan Omahen, describes this process as having been “paved with teamwork.” Employees play a key role in the implementation and continued success of energy management initiatives.

ISO standards help companies like St. Mary’s Cement reduce the level of energy they consume and increase productivity. St. Mary’s Cement in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada runs all year round and is capable of producing 1.8 million metric tons of cement. Energy represents about 35% of the plant’s production costs. Natural Resources Canada’s Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC) supports companies like St. Mary’s Cement who reduce the level of energy they consume through global energy management systems like ISO 50001.

IBM Becomes Leader with ISO 50001 Energy Management Program

IBM’s Bromont facility in Canada demonstrates how other facilities can become efficient, sustainable, and profitable with the ISO 50001 energy management program. IBM has had an environmental policy in place for over 40 years and their energy efficiency program has been implemented in the policy for over 20 years. ISO 50001 certification was a logical next step as part of their continuous improvement process. ISO 50001 certification required teamwork between several departments at the plant in Bromont, but the energy and financial savings have been significant.

New Gold Tackles Sustainable Mining Management

New Gold (a Canadian mining company) describes how they are transforming energy efficiency for the mining sector. The New Afton Mine in British Columbia that produces gold and copper has implemented effective energy management practices and achieved ISO 50001 certification. ISO 50001 helps integrate energy performance into energy practices and drives the continual improvement of that energy performance. New Afton is the first mine in North America to obtain the certification.
