St. Marys Cement Global Energy Management Implementation Case Study

First ISO 50001 certified industrial facility in North America

This case study describes how since implementing ISO 50001 in 2011, the Bowmanville plant has re-certified in both CEE (Certification in Energy Excellence – Gold Award ) in 2013 and ISO 50001 in 2014. In 2012, the first full year after ISO 50001 certification, the Bowmanville plant was able to produce 117,840 equivalent tons more product than 2011 while reducing energy consumption by 0.0063 MWH/equivalent ton, resulting in a total annual energy savings of 34,286 GJ and a total energy cost savings of $2,071,309 USD.

This case study describes how 3M facilities were among the first to pilot the implementation of ISO 50001 in 2011, and, since that time, 3M has implemented the standard at eighteen facilities in seven countries. Superior Energy Performance (ISO 50021) has been implemented at three of the eighteen facilities. 3M facilities participating in ISO 50001 and ISO 50021 have shown an energy performance improvement of 10.5% over the past three years.

KI Pembroke is Making Changes and Saving Energy

Located in Pembroke, Ontario, KI Pembroke is a world-class producer of steel filing and storage office furniture, committed to sustainable manufacturing processes. Dan Mellen, general manager at KI Pembroke, explains that a driving force behind their success has been their partnership with the Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (CIPEC). In 2012, KI Pembroke took advantage of corporate’s new energy policy to begin their own energy management system, to maximize the benefits of energy efficiency. They set a target in 2013 to reduce their energy consumption by approximately 10% and then they partnered with CIPEC, among others, to launch a campaign featuring awareness events, workshops, and training.

In this video, the Brampton plant team describes the plant’s partnership with Natural Resources Canada’s Canadian Industry Program for Energy Conservation (NRCan’s CIPEC) for support towards ISO 50001 certification. Plant manager, Dan Omahen, describes this process as having been “paved with teamwork.” Employees play a key role in the implementation and continued success of energy management initiatives.

IBM has had an environmental policy in place for over 40 years and their energy efficiency program has been implemented in the policy for over 20 years. ISO 50001 certification was a logical next step as part of their continuous improvement process. ISO 50001 certification required teamwork between several departments at the plant in Bromont, but the energy and financial savings have been significant.
