At the eighth Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM8), held in Beijing, China on 6-8 June 2017, energy ministers and heads of delegation announced more ambitious goals for the CEM’s work in the area of electric vehicles (EV30@30), urban energy systems, buildings efficiency, and advanced power plant flexibility (APPF);  exchanged views with global business leaders, energy experts from industry, academia, and international organisations in four public-private roundtable discussions; and launched a new era of ‘shared global leadership’ for the CEM.

The report Next Generation Wind and Solar Power – From Cost to Value has been released as a collaborative product of the Clean Energy Ministerial’s Solar and Wind Working Group and the International Energy Agency. The report explores the dramatic expansion of variable renewable energy, the challenges this presents to power system operators and regulators, and possible solutions, including policies to maximize the system value of electricity from wind and solar power.

World Energy Trilemma 2016

The 2016 World Energy Trilemma report aims to support policymakers in the complex task of translating the trilemma goals of energy security, energy equity, and environmental sustainability into implementation actions. The 2016 report identifies five areas where countries have focused efforts to drive progress on the energy trilemma goals and, in each focus area, analyzes selected policy tools and highlights the barriers from policy design to implementation.

Solutions Center Report Reviews International Experiences in Wheeling and Banking Strategies

Report offers insights for regulators and policy makers working to achieve renewable energy goals

The Clean Energy Regulators Initiative (CERI) has released a new report, Wheeling and Banking Strategies for Optimal Renewable Energy Deployment: International Experiences. CERI is a partnership between two Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) initiatives, the Clean Energy Solutions Center and 21st Century Power Partnership, and Leonardo Energy. As variable renewable generation increases worldwide, policy makers and regulators are adopting new or revised wheeling and banking policies that could effectively support renewable development. The report defines the principles of wheeling (transmission) tariffs and renewable energy banking provisions and their role in renewable energy deployment in countries with plans for large-scale renewable energy.

Malaysia Establishes Feed-in Tariffs to Accelerate Renewable Energy Deployment

Clean Energy Solutions Center facilitates collaboration to develop and implement supportive policies

Malaysia has taken steps to further clean energy deployment by mandating adoption of a renewable energy feed-in tariff (FiT) mechanism under the country’s 2011 Renewable Energy Act. The Malaysian Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) and the Clean Energy Regulators Initiative (CERI) are working together to enable FiT implementation and renewable energy development, with CERI supporting SEDA’s efforts to review and improve FiTs for solar photovoltaic (PV), bioenergy, small hydropower, and geothermal energy resources and technologies. The Clean Energy Ministerial’s (CEM’s) Clean Energy Solutions Center Ask an Expect service facilitated the SEDA-CERI partnership.

Clean Energy Solutions Center Expands Policy Assistance and Provides New Services on Finance

Expanded services and resources will help countries achieve national clean energy and climate goals

As the climate negotiations continue during COP21 in Paris, the Clean Energy Ministerial announced a major scale-up of its Clean Energy Solutions Center to help countries implement solutions post-Paris to achieve their clean energy and climate goals. The expansion includes scaling up the highly successful Ask An Expert service and launching new services on clean energy finance.

The Clean Energy Ministerial’s Clean Energy Solutions Center has published Policies to Spur Energy Access, a comprehensive report produced jointly with the International Institute for Environment and Development. The report reveals policy options for developing countries to engage the private sector in creating market solutions to energy access and includes in-depth case studies of public–private programs for financing energy access in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Mali, Mexico, and Nepal.

Clean Energy Ministerial and World Bank to Help Countries Scale Up, Integrate Renewable Energy in Grids

The Clean Energy Ministerial and the World Bank’s Energy Sector Management Assistance Program will work together to deliver targeted technical assistance to help developing and middle-income countries integrate large shares of wind and solar energy into their electricity grids. Together, the initiatives will deliver the most advanced knowledge—from technical integration of variable renewable energy (VRE) and smart grids to harmonized policy and regulatory frameworks—that will draw from the experiences of vanguard countries already managing high percentages of wind and solar penetration.
