10 Ways the Clean Energy Ministerial Is Helping Drive the World’s Clean Energy Revolution

If we’re going to solve the challenge of climate change, we need to make a rapid shift to clean energy. That’s why the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) was launched in 2010. At this year’s seventh annual Clean Energy Ministerial meeting, CEM7, energy ministers and business leaders from more than 25 countries will tackle a number of challenges, such as reaching the clean energy goals outlined in the COP21 Paris Climate Agreement. But the CEM is more than just a meeting. It’s also a collection of groundbreaking campaigns and initiatives that provide people around the world with the tools they need to join the clean energy revolution. 21CPP Fellowship Program Builds Power System Expertise

The CEM’s 21st Century Power Partnership (21CPP) has launched a fellowship program to support mid-career peer learning, mentorship, skills development, and collaborative research among partner institutions to support power systems transformation. 21CPP fellows will spend an average six to eight weeks on assignment in a host organization with scientific or practical expertise in a needed field of study. The first two fellows came from India to work at U.S. national laboratories to learn about the methodologies and software tools used in large-scale integration studies.

Making Coal Flexible: Getting From Baseload to Peaking Plant

Power systems in the 21st century will favor resources that have low marginal costs and provide system flexibility, including the ability to cycle on and off and to run at low minimum loads to complement variations in output. This paper uses a case study of a coal-fired generating station (CGS) to evaluate how power plants intended to run at baseload can evolve to serve other system needs. It shows that coal-fired power plants can continue to operate cost-effectively if they cycle routinely. This report is also available in Mandarin.

At this year’s 3GF Summit Partnership Session—which took place on 7 June 2016 in Copenhagen, Denmark—speakers from the United States, China, European Union (Denmark), Ukraine, Mexico, and Chile provided global perspectives on the transformation to a more sustainable power system following COP21 and debated the conclusions with about 70 high-level participants.
