Secretariat Update – Spring 2011

Message from U.S. Assistant Secretary of Energy David Sandalow

In several days, energy ministers and other leaders from around the world will convene in Abu Dhabi for the second Clean Energy Ministerial.

The Clean Energy Ministerial is a unique forum, in which ministers from the world’s major economies are driving progress on clean energy innovation and deployment. Participating governments account for 80 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and more than 70 percent of global gross domestic product. They also fund the vast majority of public research and development in clean energy technologies.

The Ministerial’s 11 initiatives cover a broad range of clean energy technologies—from energy-efficient appliances, to electric vehicles to wind and solar power. Each of these initiatives is empowering energy decision makers around the world and facilitating international cooperation to support and amplify national government clean energy programs.

The potential for these initiatives is enormous—eliminating the need to build more than 500 mid-size power plants in the next 20 years; bringing improved energy services to more than 10 million people without access to electricity by 2015; promoting rapid deployment of renewable energy, carbon capture and storage and electric vehicles; and encouraging young women to pursue careers in clean energy.

In Abu Dhabi, we’ll highlight the concrete progress already made through the initiatives and discuss the path forward to the third Clean Energy Ministerial (London 2012) and beyond. This year’s ministerial will also feature several public-private roundtables, at which governments will more deeply engage with industry and other stakeholders on how the Ministerial process can best help them deploy clean energy technologies.

I encourage you to browse through the rest of our website to learn more about the Ministerial initiatives and how they are accelerating the world’s transition to clean energy.

Sincerely,

David Sandalow
