Clean Energy Ministerial Newsletter

Secretariat Update – Winter 2010

Message from U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu

Dear Colleagues,
In July, I had the honor to host the first Clean Energy Ministerial in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, we rolled up our sleeves and got to work, launching eleven new initiatives to accelerate the world's transition to clean energy technologies. Leaders at November's G-20 meeting reaffirmed the importance of the Clean Energy Ministerial initiatives to our shared future. We have made tremendous progress over the past months, and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in moving our work forward.

I encourage you take a moment to read more about our collective progress in this newsletter. For example, China recently hosted a productive meeting on electric vehicles, while the Republic of Korea hosted a successful meeting on the smart grid initiative. Our initiative to accelerate the deployment of super-efficient products is actively moving forward on government procurement, minimum standards, and incentives coordination.

Now we need to keep the momentum going. Our need for clean energy won't wait, and we won't either. As we look forward to the second Ministerial meeting, let us also look for areas where we can expand our engagement and deepen our commitments. Working together, we can promote economic growth and build a healthier planet. I am proud of our work so far, and I look forward to our continued cooperation.

Steven Chu
U.S. Secretary of Energy

Message from the UAE's Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber

Dear Colleagues,
We look forward to welcoming you to Abu Dhabi on April 6th and 7th for the second Clean Energy Ministerial. We envisage the main focus of CEM2 being on the demonstrable progress made under the various initiatives. Countries will be free to advance new initiatives, but as hosts, together with the Secretariat, we propose to structure the agenda so as to offer greater attention to the positive progress made on existing initiatives and any increased participant commitments within them. As in the Washington meeting, the meeting will incorporate both government-only and public stakeholder sessions. Let me also convey my thanks to the UK government, which will host a preparatory meeting for the Ministerial in February. We look forward to working with you in the weeks and months ahead to ensure an extraordinary event.

Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber
Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and
Special Envoy for Energy & Climate Change
