Global Superior Energy Performance Partnership (GSEP)

Steel Working Group

With global demand for steel increasing due to rapid economic development in emerging economies, it is more important than ever to improve the efficiency of energy intensive steel plants. The Steel Working Group will create a framework through which governments and companies can work closely together in a practical and bottom-up manner to share information on clean technologies and to cooperate to implement such technologies among steel-producing countries. Under the Working Group, key experts, and leaders from the public, private, and academic/research sectors will exchange information and create practical projects through public-private partnerships.

The Asia-Pacific Partnership Steel and Iron Task Force has produced significant outcomes, such as the State-of-the-Art Clean Technology Handbook, which is a comprehensive document that contains information on energy-saving technologies and practices in the steel and iron industry in different parts of the world.

Participants

The Working Group will build upon the scope of work introduced under the Asia-Pacific Partnership Steel and Iron Task Force, which is a partnership among the governments and business communities of Australia, Canada, China, India, Japan, Korea, and the United States.

Policy Opportunities

The Steel Working Group recognizes the significant potential that exists to conserve energy in the steel sector by sharing information on improved technologies and practices and cooperating further to implement them. The Working Group will provide a unique forum for public-private dialogue and cooperation, and will focus on the following:

  • Setting relevant benchmarks and performance indices
  • Promoting the development and dissemination of best-practice steel technologies
  • Enhancing cooperation between government agencies, research bodies, and steel industry institutions
