A Cleaner Future for Power Stations: Interdepartmental Task Group Discussion Paper

Australian Department of Resources

Energy and Tourism

1 November 2010

This report discusses the implementation and development of the Australian Cleaner Future for Power Stations election commitment, which includes the establishment of new emissions standards and reporting requirements for power stations. The report specifically provides details on the new standard that all new coal-fired power stations will be required to meet best practice emissions standards and be built ready for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS-ready). These measures were developed and implemented by an interdepartmental task group in consultation with energy market institutions, state and territory governments, industry, and environmental stakeholders. Clean coal technologies discussed include integrated gasification combined cycles (IGCC), as well as super and ultra supercritical pulverized coal combustion (PCC).
