This white paper discusses “self-healing” as a desired smart grid design feature that enables problematic elements of an electrical system to be identified, isolated and restored with little or no manual intervention, to minimize interruptions of service. The paper defines the Self-Heals principal characteristic, describes barriers to self-healing in the current electric system and offers recommendations for achieving self-healing characteristics in the future.
