This paper describes a preferred method for calculating the capacity value of wind and discusses the pertinent issues surrounding it, such as key metrics and the use of time-dependent load and power output data. Approximate methods for the calculating the capacity value of wind are also described and their limitations are highlighted. The paper also discusses the outcome of recent wind capacity value analyses in Europe and North America.
