Application process open for ISGAN’s 2019 Award of Excellence

Nominations are now open for the fifth ISGAN Award of Excellence competition, which will recognize excellence in innovation, integration, and transformation of smart grid systems. The award is sponsored by the Clean Energy Ministerial’s International Smart Grid Action Network (ISGAN), in partnership with the Global Smart Grid Federation (GSGF).

Smart microgrids are modern, small-scale versions of the centralized electricity system. They achieve specific local goals, such as reliability, carbon emission reduction, diversification of energy sources, and cost reduction, established by the community being served. Like the bulk power grid, smart microgrids generate, distribute, and regulate the flow of electricity to consumers, but do so locally. Smart microgrids are an ideal way to integrate renewable resources on the community level and allow for customer participation in the electricity enterprise.

Recognizing the critical importance and the role of smart grids sustaining a reliable and resilient grid through integration of energy systems, ISGAN has chosen “Smart Grids for Local Integrated Energy Systems (Smart Microgrids)” as the theme of the 2019 Award of Excellence.

Any organization with experiences of pilot, demonstration and deployment projects focusing on the local integrated energy systems (microgrids) are invited to participate in this prestigious awards competition. A Ministerial-level forum working to accelerate the global clean energy transition, the CEM holds annual awards to showcase leadership and achievements that support organizational, national, and global climate goals.

To enter the competition, each organization must submit a brief but structured case study describing its experience of microgrid projects and the resulting benefits. The submissions will be evaluated by an independent panel of international experts.

The winning organizations will be recognized next year during the 10th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM10) meeting, which will be held in Vancouver, Canada and attended by energy ministers and corporate leaders from around the globe.

The submission deadline is 15 November 2018. Interested parties are encouraged to visit the ISGAN Awards website, www.iea-isgan.org/award/2019, to learn more about the award rules, entry format, scoring, and recognition.
