2021 AWARDS

Overview

Congratulations to the 2021 award winners! The CEM Energy Management Leadership Awards celebrate leading organizations that use the global ISO 50001 energy management system (EnMS) standard to attain enduring improvement in energy performance.

In 2021, the CEM’s Energy Management Leadership Awards are honoring four companies with the top Award of Excellence in Energy Management and recognizing another 28 organizations with the distinguished Energy Management Insight Award. Both groups of awardees do more than use energy management systems to cost-effectively save energy and cut emissions—they help raise global awareness of the associated economic and sustainability benefits.

Award recipients are listed below, along with their case studies.* See Global ISO 50001 Achievements: Reducing costs, energy use, and CO2 emissions for highlights on each award recipient. Meet the energy management experts who served as our 2021 judges.

Awards of excellence winners

Abastible S.A., an energy solutions market leader, implemented its first EnMS at the Lenga plant, one of the company’s main facilities, with the goal of reducing energy intensity 1% each year, year over year. The company also developed an innovative savings and emissions reduction service that uses Blockchain technology to provide stakeholders with transparency about energy savings methods and emissions reductions achieved—7,870 kilograms of CO2 equivalent in one year.

Dubai Municipality has jurisdiction over city services and the upkeep of facilities in the emirate of Dubai. The municipality has several office buildings that are intermittently occupied, presenting an opportunity to decrease energy use. Energy reduction approaches focused on controlling the HVAC, a dominant energy consumer, and converting lighting systems to LEDs. Since the energy management system’s launch in 2012, the projects have saved over 20,000 gigajoules of energy and USD 688,903 in energy costs.

JW Marriott Washington, DC, a luxury hotel that is part of the Marriott International, Inc., chain, first achieved ISO 50001 in 2013 and was recertified in 2016. Top management are directly involved in monitoring data provided through the EnMS to gauge energy use and make adjustments to ensure progress. Management also appointed a hotel energy team that incorporates representatives from all major departments, ensuring a holistic and inclusive approach that has saved over 9,500 gigajoules of energy and USD 221,551 of energy costs over three years.

Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club, a 36-hole standard tournament golf course, established an ISO 50001 EnMS in 2013 and, since then, has reduced electricity consumption by 22% and LPG consumption by 54%, with associated energy cost savings of USD 1,428,565. Operational adjustments account for most of these savings, but the club has also undertaken significant projects such as installing heat pump technology and replacing a gas-based hot water system. These efforts were initiated after energy reviews identified these heating systems as significant energy users.

Awards of excellence winners

CTBC Financial Holding Co., Ltd. pursued ISO 50001 and other ISO standards at its CTBC Bank headquarters in 2012, then certified 152 bank branches. Galvanized by the energy and environmental benefits achieved by CTBC Bank, other CTBC subsidiaries followed suit, with 194 sites eventually certified to ISO 50001. Over seven years, CTBC Holdings increased energy performance 16 percent and cut carbon emissions by 5,316 metric tons.

JK Tyre & Industries Ltd. adopted ISO 50001 at its Vikrant Tyre Plant, in 2013 to help shrink its carbon footprint from fossil fuel use 70% by 2023—while increasing production. Over the past seven years, the plant has cut its emissions (CO2 equivalent) by more than 71 tons and reduced its energy costs by US $1,888,262. The EnMS helped the plant establish strong internal and external communications and clearly define criteria for efficiently operating and maintaining all significant energy-using equipment to maintain and grow its savings.

PT Indofood CBP Sukses Makmur Tbk. Noodle Division is a leading maker of instant noodles and the first such manufacturer in Southeast Asia to earn ISO 50001 certification. The Noodle Division’s three certified facilities collectively reduced their energy use by 10.7% over three years—cutting energy costs by US $830,400 and emissions by 25,526 metric tons (carbon dioxide equivalent). Leveraging a central approach to implementation, the company now plans to extend its EnMS to all 17 facilities in its Noodle Division.
Tipperary Co-Operative Creamery Limited began setting up an EnMS in 2017 as part of its plan to become carbon neutral by 2030 and comply with Ireland’s Energy Efficiency Directive. Over the two-year performance period, the company cut its energy costs by $562,342 and its carbon-equivalent emissions by 2,918 metric tons. The company now sells the verified energy credits from these savings and reinvests the funds into more energy projects.

Awards of excellence winners

On 29 May 2019, these four companies will receive the top honor, the Award of Excellence in Energy Management, at the CEM10 meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada:

3M expanded its ISO 50001 expertise and certification from two initial plants in 2011 (pilot study) to 30 sites in seven countries as part of its global enterprise model. Over three years, the 30 sites improved their collective energy performance by 4.5%—reducing energy use by more than 1.9 million GJ, cutting emissions by 330,000 tons (carbon dioxide equivalent), and lowering energy costs by USD 13.5 million.

Areej Vegetable Oils & Derivatives S.A.O.C (AVOD), the first company in Oman to achieve ISO 50001 certification, used its ISO 50001-certified EnMS to reduce natural gas use 23% and electricity use 11% over a one-year performance period. The plant installed energy meters; trained and engaged staff members; made simple changes in daily operations; and installed more energy efficient motors, pumps, and variable frequency drives.

JK Tyre & Industries, Ltd. of India saved nearly USD 1.8 million over a six-year period as its Chennai Plant gained certification and recertification to ISO 50001. By identifying the pieces of equipment that use the most energy, the plant prioritized opportunities for energy savings. In addition to using more renewable energy, the plant installed devices that alert staff to even slight increases in energy use and upgraded multiple systems to reduce both energy and water demand.

PT Pupuk Kalimantan Timur in Indonesia has certified two plants to ISO 50001. As the largest fertilizer company in Southeast Asia, the company supplies more than six million tons of product to domestic and foreign markets. The EnMS system led the state-owned company to upgrade operations and equipment at the two plants to save more than 866,000 GJ and USD 3.9 million in energy costs. An internal award for energy-saving innovations has led to two patents.
