Gigatonne by 2030

Goal

The objective if the Gigatonne by 2030 campaign, co-led by CEM and Mission Innovation, is to help accelerate the deployment of both carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) and novel carbon dioxide removal (CDR), to reach Gigatonne scale by 2030. This is a stretch goal, but achievable if governments, industries and other key stakeholders work together effectively.
Organised and driven by the CEM CCUS Initiative and the MI CDR Mission, this campaign is the first ever bringing together both the Clean Energy Ministerial and the Mission Innovation processes.
We observe that opportunities for deeper collaboration exist, to improve the capability of CEM and MI to help accelerate carbon management solutions amongst their members and more broadly. Such deeper collaboration will:
- Enhance coordination between CEM CCUS and MI CDR via a common agenda,
- Elevate the need to accelerate carbon management to minister-level discussions,
- Encourage ministerial hosts to give a platform to carbon management alongside other critical decarbonization and energy technologies,
- Bring continuity to carbon management discussions, year-upon-year, to demonstrate progress and increase ambition,
- Allow to exploit the unique combination of both innovation and deployment policy considerations brought by both Mission Innovation and Clean Energy Ministerial to materially advance the development and deployment of carbon management across CEM and MI countries.
- Allow for more regular engagement with CEM Industrial Deep Decarbonisation Initiative (IDDI), MI Net Zero Industries Mission (NIM), and possibly other CEM and MI initiatives on broader carbon management issues.
Carbon Management Project Awards
The Gigatonne by 2030 “Carbon Management Project Awards” was launched in April 2026. The objective of the Awards is to showcase and share information from real-life, industrial-scale carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) and novel carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects that have successfully started operation or are demonstrably under construction. By highlighting successful project implementation, the Awards will provide inspiration for other projects to succeed, and increase the global project pipeline.
Up to three (3) carbon management projects will receive the Award through this process every year. The winning projects will be invited to present their main features and be given prominence by CEM CCUS and MI CDR, providing the projects with visibility on ministerial level. They will also be invited to knowledge sharing events.
Carbon Management Challenge
Gigatonne by 2030 supports the Carbon Management Challenge (CMC), launched in 2023 by Leaders at the Major Economies Forum and elevated at COP28. The CMC is a call to action to scale up carbon management solutions to gigatonne (Gt) scale by 2030. This challenge, backed by 23 countries plus the EC, complements the global pledges to triple renewable generation capacity and to double the annual average rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030.
Activities
Ministerial roundtables
The campaign organizes ministerial high-level roundtable discussions at the yearly CEM & MI ministerial meetings. A summary of the August 2025 roundtable can be found here. The next ministerial roundtable is planned for the October 2026 CEM & MI ministerial meeting.
Workshops
Under the campaign, CEM CCUS Initiative and MI CDR Mission have organized a series of workshops to discuss various aspects of carbon management deployment.
Community
Co-leads
Members of the CEM CCUS Initiative and MI CDR Mission form the campaign members.
