REN21 2015 Global Status Report Webinar Series > Renewable Energy Integration
The Clean Energy Solutions Center, in partnership with the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21), hosted this webinar-based training for the launch of REN21’s flagship report, the Renewables 2015 Global Status Report, which focused on its findings related to renewable energy integration. Participants learned what made 2014 another record year for renewables and how increased additions of solar PV and wind in the electricity sector have driven other energy sectors and how 2014 marks the first time we decoupled CO2 emissions from economic growth.
This webinar began with an overview of REN21’s newly released Renewables 2015 Global Status Report and then looked at the status of integrating increased shares of renewables—specifically in Europe and America. With the estimated renewable energy share of global electricity production standing at 22.8%, utilities are grappling with how best to bring large amounts of renewable energy online. Participants heard about what has happened to date and where future challenges and opportunities might be.
The presentations were followed by a question and answer session with the audience.
About the Global Status Report: REN21’s Renewables Global Status Report (GSR), first released in 2005, provides a comprehensive and timely overview of renewable energy market, industry, investment and policy developments worldwide. The report is a true collaborative effort of authors, REN21 Secretariat staff and Steering Committee members, and regional research partners, and includes the input of over 500 individual contributors and reviewers. The GSR has become the most frequently referenced report on renewable energy business and policy, serving a wide range of audiences.
Panelists
Laura Williamson, Communication and Outreach Manager, REN21
Laura Williamson is the Communication and Outreach Manager at REN21—the Renewable Energy Policy Network of the 21st Century—where she is responsible for promoting the efforts of REN21 to an international audience. Laura’s other activities include managing the production of specific reports and coordinating the biennial International Renewable Energy Conference. From 2008 to 2013, Laura was the Project Director for HELIO International, an international think-tank developing renewable energy solutions. Previously, she worked for the United Nations Environment Programme on industry and sustainability issues.
Sven Teske
Mr. Teske has recently completed a PhD thesis on grid integration strategies and infrastructural planning requirements for 100% renewable energy systems, and he took his current position as the Director for Greenpeace’s Renewable Energy Campaign in 2004. In this position, he led the work on the Energy [R]evolution: a Sustainable World Energy Outlook and specific grid analysis reports for Europe and China. He was also lead author for the IPCC Special Report Renewables (SRREN).
