Global Renewable Energy Status and Medium-term Outlook Until 2018

6 November 2013

The Clean Energy Solutions Center in partnership with the Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) presented this webinar exploring the key findings of REN21’s Renewables 2013 Global Status Report and IEA’s Medium-Term Renewable Energy Market Report 2013: Market Trends and Projections to 2018, which speaks to the cumulating effect of steady growth in renewable energy markets, support policies and investment over the past years. The latest report provides a comprehensive and timely overview of renewable energy market, industry, investment and policy development worldwide. 2012 saw:

  • A shift in investment patterns from industrialized to developing countries
  • A decrease in overall clean energy investment in dollar terms but simultaneously saw an increase in installed capacity in GW due to significant technology cost reductions
  • Renewables progressively supplementing established electricity systems demonstrating that the implementation of suitable policies can enable the successful integration of higher shares of variable renewables
  • The emergence of integrated policy approaches that link energy efficiency measures with the implementation of renewable energy technologies.

The IEA’s Medium-Term Renewable Energy Market Report 2013 assesses market trends for the renewable electricity, biofuels for transport and renewable heat sectors, identifying drivers and challenges to deployment, and making projections through 2018. The analysis features in-depth renewable electricity market analysis and forecasts for a slate of countries in the OECD and non-OECD. The report also presents an outlook for renewable electricity technologies, global biofuels supply, final energy use of renewables for heat and prospects for renewable investment.
