Five Keys to Unlock CCS Investment

Sources:

International Energy Agency

This report notes that there is lower investment in carbon capture and storage (CCS) than in renewable energy technologies, and that there is a need to mobilize private sector investment to close this gap. To accelerate progress towards CCS commercialization, the authors offer five recommendations: (1) pursue “low-hanging fruit” opportunities to build CCS deployment and experience from the group up, (2) tailor policies to shepherd CCS through the early deployment phase and address the unique integration challenges for they entail, (3) target multiple pathways to reduce costs, from technological innovation in carbon capture and CO2 utilization to progressive financing arrangements, build CO2 networks and accelerate CO2 storage assessments in key regions and (5 strengthen partnerships and cooperation between industry and governments.
