Fertilizer and Pesticides
Fertilizers and pesticides are necessary to increase crop production to meet growing demand. The most energy intensive requirement of modern agricultural is the use of synthetic agricultural chemicals developed from fossil fuels (Energy in Synthetic Fertilizers and Pesticides, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, 1994).
