Ecosystem Planning and Policies

“Ecosystem services are the direct and indirect contributions of ecosystems to human well-being” (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity Ecological and Economic Foundations, Routledge Abingdon, 2010, p. 410). These services provide direct and indirect support to human survival and quality of life through the provision of products, ecosystem processes, habitats and cultural values. Ecosystem services recognize the value of natural systems that is often overlooked as it is not always defined in monetary terms. Identifying the ecosystem services associated with the energy, water and food sectors is essential to ensure development is conducted in a sustainable manner that fairly considers all resources, including ecosystems.
