This publication provides a baseline understanding of gender equality and women’s empowerment in East African Communities (EAC). It focuses on the current status of women in the energy sector and decision-making positions in East Africa, and it presents the main barriers to and achievements of gender equality and women’s empowerment in EAC. The study examines the current policy, regulatory and institutional frameworks surrounding gender mainstreaming in the clean energy sector among EAC Partner States, and it aims to be a resource for governments focusing and harmonizing their current efforts at gender mainstreaming, and collectively mobilizing support for a gender inclusive energy sector.
